MILAN FOR KIDS: THE MUBA

MUBA Milan has a rather magnificent setting inside the Rotonda della Besana, one of the city’s hidden treasures little-known even among the Milanese themselves.

This 18th-century gem is a circular cloister with a long portico of no less than 38 arches in red brick and stone, topped off by an elegant tiled roof.

The visual impact is as striking as it sounds. The strict symmetry of the buildings contrasts with the grassy peace of the garden inside to create a mood of relaxed tranquillity, making this the perfect place for children of all ages – and like-minded grown-ups – to spend happy hours enjoying life’s simple genuine joys.

The Rotonda has had a varied and charmed life over the years. It even fell into disuse before being lovingly restored in the 1980s as a public open space that has become a focal point for the city’s cultural and leisure pursuits.

And that’s where the MUBA comes in. Milan Children’s Museum is one of Italy’s most innovative attractions dedicated to the tender years of life.

Established in 2014, it’s a permanent centre for artistic and cultural projects for young children, where educational approaches blend with creative play, offering kids a chance to learn through art, games and interaction.

The MUBA workshops and displays are designed to stimulate youngsters’ curiosity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills in a safe, engaging environment through tactile, visual and audio experiences. It’s a crucible of creativity, where the educational aims are always seasoned by a sense of fun and wonder. Your specialist guide will greet you and accompany the whole family on a unique adventure that’s sure to be lots of fun! And there’s one more treat in store: a hidden “sculpture of the future” for the children of the next millennium to discover! The adults can complete their Rotonda della Besana experience with a tour of the surrounding streets. This unjustly overlooked area has a fine crop of historic buildings that exude the style, sobriety and character of yesteryear’s bourgeois Milan.
